Investment Metrics - Current Holdings
Your current holdings are displayed in the Prices view. The philosophy of the Prices view is to show only values related to your current holdings. Any closed positions are not included.
Prices View Overview
There are 4 types of holdings in the Prices view.
- Individual Lot - The lot of shares was purchased by one transaction. An individual lot can come from a buy, shares-in or re-invested distribution (i.e. dividend or capital gain) transaction.
- Multi Lot - More than one lot of shares in the same security. The individual lots are aggregated into a single line that represents the total of all the individual lots. The individual lots contained in a Multi Lot holding come from the same types of transactions as Individual Lot holdings (i.e. buys, shares-in or re-invested dividends). The "Symbol" column will always show the date of acquisition.
- Category - Categories group 1 or more individual or multi lot holdings together.
Portfolio Totals - All current holdings in the portfolio are summed together to calculate the values in the Total line.
The following sections describe the various returns, performance and other metric columns available in the Prices view. For more information on adding and removing columns to your Portfolios, check out our section on How to Configure Columns.
Standard Gains/Losses Columns
Change / Day% - The change from the previous trading day's closing price and its percentage change.
DayGain - The gain or loss in this investment for the current trading day, based on the change from the previous day's closing price. If the investment was purchased today, the gain or loss is based on the change from the purchase price.
Gain / Gain % - The gain or loss in this investment from the cost basis (i.e. including transaction costs). The value is in the holding's native currency.
Gain Ccy / Gain % Ccy - The gain or loss in this investment from the cost basis, converted from the holding's native currency to the currency of the Portfolio, including exchange rate changes. The initial exchange rate (column: "Buy FX") is taken from the purchase transaction (if available) or from the historical exchange rate between the holding's currency and the Portfolio's currency on the date of the transaction. The current exchange rate is downloaded automatically and can be displayed with the "FX" column.
Gain YTD / Gain YTD % - The gain or loss from the beginning of the calendar year or from the date of purchase if the lot was acquired since the beginning of the year. The value is in the holding's native currency. For the GainYTD% cell in the Total line, the value is calculated using the total from the GainYTD and the market value (including cash) at the start of the year.
Gain YTD Ccy / Gain YTD % Ccy - The gain or loss from the beginning of the calendar year or from the date of purchase if the lot was acquired since the beginning of the year, converted from the holding's native currency to the currency of the Portfolio, including exchange rate changes. The initial exchange rate will be the historical exchange rate at the start of the year. The current exchange rate is downloaded automatically. For the GainYTD% Ccy cell in the Total line, the value is calculated using the total from the GainYTD Ccy and the market value (including cash) at the start of the year.
Gain MTD / Gain MTD Ccy - Similar to the "Gain YTD" columns, this is the gain or loss from the beginning of the calendar month or from the date of purchase if the lot was acquired since the beginning of the month, converted from the holding's native currency to the currency of the Portfolio, including exchange rate changes. The initial exchange rate will be the historical exchange rate at the close of the last day of the previous month.
Note for YTD and MTD values that contain converted values: the first day of the year or month (respectively) can show a Gain YTD/MTD that is different than the DayGain due to exchange rate changes since the closing rate on the previous day. That is, the Gain YTD/MTD includes exchange rate changes, but the DayGain column does not.
Note on Currency Conversion
Categories and Portfolio Totals display the sum values of their holdings. Note, however, that for holdings that are in a currency other than the portfolio's currency, the "Ccy" column's value will be used. This is because the holding's native value needs to first be converted to the same currency as the portfolio in order to be summed together with the other values. For example, the "Gain" column in the Total line is the sum of the "Gain Ccy" columns because the "Gain Ccy" columns are all in the currency of the portfolio whereas the "Gain" column is in the holding's native currency.
Total Return Columns
TR / TR % - The total return gain or loss in this investment from the cost basis (i.e. including transaction costs) and including any recorded dividends, capital gains, return-of-capital or interest payments that pertain to the current lots. The value is in the holding's native currency.
For multi lots, categories and portfolio total, the cost basis used in the TR calculation does not include the cost basis of any lots that were acquired as a result of re-invested distributions (dividends, cap gains, etc). Lots from re-invested distributions are gains, not expenses, and as such do not count toward the holding's cost basis when calculating the TR. (Side note: when you calculate the cost basis for tax purposes, re-invested distributions are included.)
TR Ccy / TR % Ccy - The total return in this investment from the cost basis, converted from the holding's native currency to the currency of the Portfolio, including exchange rate changes. The exchange rates used in this calculation are handled in the same way as for the "Gain Ccy" columns described above.
TR YTD / TR YTD % - The total return from the beginning of the calendar year or from the date of purchase if the lot was acquired since the beginning of the year. The value is in the holding's native currency.
TR YTD Ccy / TR YTD % Ccy - The total return from the beginning of the calendar year or from the date of purchase if the lot was acquired since the beginning of the year, converted from the holding's native currency to the currency of the Portfolio, including exchange rate changes. The initial exchange rate will be the historical exchange rate at the start of the year. The currency exchange rate is downloaded automatically.
As with the standard gains/losses columns, Categories and Totals display the sum values of their holdings. The holding's native values will first be converted to the currency of the Category or Portfolio when computing the sums.
Ann. TR % - The annualized total return gain/loss percentage. For individual lot holdings, the TR % value is annualized using the formula
- ( (1 + TR%/100) ^ ( 365 / days-held ) - 1 ) * 100
For multi-lot holdings, Categories and Portfolio Totals, the Ann. TR % is also calculated with the formula above, but the days-held are computed from the earliest transaction of the multi-lot holding, Category or Portfolio.
CAGR, TWRR and IRR
CAGR is the Compounded Annual Growth Rate that the item has returned since purchase, including transaction costs. CAGR is a simple calculation but can only be applied to individual lots. It does not make sense to apply it to multi-lots and thus the aggregate line of a multi-lot holding will show "N/A" in the CAGR column. For multi-lots, use the TWRR column instead.
TWRR is the compounded annual Time Weighted Rate of Return that the item has returned since purchase. For individual lots, the TWRR is the same as the CAGR. For multi lots, categories and portfolio totals, TWRR is calculated based on the "cash flows" of the currently held lots only. Purchases, shares-in count as cashflows, but distributions (cash or re-invested) do not. Re-invested distributions count towards the total value of the holding, but cash distributions do not.
IRR is the Internal Rate of Return (or Dollar Weighted Return) that this item has returned since purchase. For individual lots, the IRR is the same as the CAGR. For multi lots, categories and portfolio totals, IRR is calculated based on the "cash flows" of the currently held lots only. Purchases, shares-in count as cashflows, but distributions (cash or re-invested) do not. Re-invested distributions count towards the total value of the holding, but cash distributions do not.
